Essentially all silver jewellery manufacturers in Europe have the capability to make bespoke designs. However, some may prefer to sell catalogue products or limit custom designed silver jewellery production to established brands or those that can reach certain volumes. Making custom designed jewellery does require that you create product specifications which normally include the following:
- CAD file or technical drawing
- Material specification (e.g. 925 sterling silver)
- Engraving files (.ai)
Further, custom moulded jewellery requires tooling. That being said, not all sterling silver jewellery manufacturing procedures require tooling.
Private label
Another option is to buy standard jewellery pieces that can be selected from the manufacturer’s catalogue. Buying private-label jewellery doesn’t necessarily mean that you cannot do any customisation though. It is common for factories in the industry to provide engraving and custom packaging.
Material options
Some suppliers specialise in silver, while others only make pieces from 925 sterling silver. The latter is an alloy made of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals. Sterling silver is less pure, which results in a lower cost.
REACH compliance
Silver jewellery manufactured in the EU must comply with the REACH regulation, which sets strict limits on nickel, cadmium, lead, mercury and other substances that can sometimes be found in jewellery and solder. Heavy metals are also regulated in other countries, such as the US and UK. That being said, compliance with the REACH regulation is a strong indication that the materials are compliant with compliance requirements in other countries as well.
It should be noted that not all silver jewellery producers in Europe can provide material test reports. Still, they should be able to confirm in writing that their materials are fully REACH-compliant.
MOQ requirements
Most manufacturers set a higher MOQ for custom-made silver jewellery. This can range between 100 to 500 pcs per design. The MOQs tend to be lower for ready-made catalogue pieces.
