Industry overview
Material options
Essentially all European jewellery manufacturers specialise in certain materials. For example, Amberhill W.R. Sp. z o.o. in Poland is specialised in making silver and amber jewellery, while EKAN in Greece exclusively manufactures gold jewellery.
Sometimes, more than one material type is covered, but this should not be taken for granted. The material options of a supplier is therefore the first thing to consider when selecting potential manufacturing partners for your next collection.
Examples
- Gold jewellery
- Silver jewellery
- Stainless steel jewellery
- Pearl jewellery
- Amber jewellery
- Ceramic jewellery
- Gemstones
- Crystals
Custom products
Most EU-based jewellery factories have their own product catalogues that are sold to stores, wholesalers, and distributors. However, some factories also operate as contract manufacturers in the sense that they make the jewellery designs created by their customers. This in turn requires that you can provide technical drawings and a material specification.
REACH compliance
Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) is a European Union regulation that sets restrictions for certain heavy metals and other substances – that can sometimes be found in jewellery.
Examples
- Lead
- Cadmium
- Nickel
- Mercury
Selling jewellery that contains excessive amounts of restricted substances is illegal. Given that REACH is an EU regulation, it is fair to expect European jewellery manufacturers to be able to ensure compliance. That said, it is ideal if they can also demonstrate test reports that prove that their materials are compliant.
Keep in mind that the UK version of REACH applies to jewellery imported and sold in the United Kingdom. US buyers must also be aware of California Proposition 65 and CPSIA.
MOQ requirements
Some EU jewellery manufacturers don’t have a minimum order quantity requirement, while others set an MOQ based on the following:
- Number of units (e.g. 100 pcs)
- Order value (e.g. 500 EUR)
- Weight (e.g. 50 grams)
The MOQ can also be higher if you order custom-made jewellery.
